Fake It Til I Make It.

Guys, I miss my seasons. Hawaii is beautiful and I'm so grateful that we have been able to live here. But I miss the cold. I miss bundling up in cozy sweaters, tugging on my boots, searching for the perfect winter accessories. I miss the crunch of the snow under my boots and that smell in the air right before it snows.

Christmas is weird in the heat. We bought our Christmas tree in tees and shorts, in a parking lot surrounded by palm trees and we strapped our tree to the car with our surf rack. Weird.

So, I gotta fake it.

Ya see that? The fire? Do not be fooled.

It's a television. With a "Fireside Reflections" DVD. You can choose from flickering flames, medium fire or roaring fire. Personally, I prefer roaring fire.

And that is how we fake it here at the Wilkins' house.

Plus, hot chocolate and lots of candles, of course. And cranking the AC so we can wear sweatshirts and snowflake adorned pjs.

What's the weather like where you are? Are you enjoying snow? I'm jealous. I hear it's super rainy in California lately. I'm loving the rain here lately.

I think this hot weather has been contributing to my home sickness lately. I'm missing my family a lot this week. Are you with family this week? Or are you away from home like us? It's hard, isn't it?

  1. I'll trade you! Wyoming is freezing cold and I can't remember the last time my toes were warm haha.

At least you have a cozy looking house and adorable candle holders! Plus your "fireplace" is great! :)

  2. It's like a monsoon hit California! I heard on the radio today they are experiencing mudslides and evacuating people from certain places. I don't remember the last time it wasn't raining! Tomorrow is supposed to be even worse! It is awful... worse than a hurricane, dare I say!

I dislike the heat though as well. It just isn't the same. Back home they are getting snow... and we get stuck with palm trees and rain :(

  3. Living in Hawaii must be strange during the holidays because the rest of your nation is having a white Christmas. You should take a leaf out of the Aussie Christmas Book and have a beach christmas with a seafood BBQ ;)
I would love to have a winter Christmas sometime.....

  5. I do not like the cold weather, but I too would miss it....we have snow here in Virginia, it has been so cold that it is still on the ground after a week...I would luv to get fresh snow for Christmas....Merry Christmas!

  6. I am NOT a fan of winter, but I agree that it wouldn't feel as much like Christmas if it wasn't cold. I hope you and your husband have a wonderful Christmas day together, even though it's not exactly how you are wishing it could be.

  7. That totally cracked me up, way to make the most of it!! It is really weird here this year, we live in the Rocky Mountains and we have no snow yet. Seriously, if we don't get snow in a few days here I am going to be very disappointed!! I miss my family to, skype just doesn't cut it! Merry Christmas!

  8. Aw, I know I would miss the cold, and snow and wetness sloshing around if I lived in beautiful sunny Hawaii too ;0)

I'm an anti-winter gal. Hate snow, hate being cold. But the best part of living in the midwest? Fall and Spring. Summers are too hot, winters are too cold. But they're worth it for that perfect Fall or Spring day.

  10. To your Aussie follower above, the rest of the nation is not having a white Christmas! I'm from GA and live in FL, so it's never gonna happen. I hate the cold, so I'm fine with that! (I blogged about the myth of a white Christmas last week--and slightly condescendingly mentioned Australia, sorry! see blog post)

To me, Christmas is about Jesus, not cold weather/snow, and I like it that way! You compensated well for what you miss though!

  11. What a lovely tree!!! I love that video!!! TOO funny!!! I love that you are putting on the AC so you can bundle up!!! You are sooooo smart!!! When I was little we used to go to Yosemite for the holidays {we haven't been there for 8 years now} and I loved the crunching snow and building snowmen and snow angels. It has been raining like crazy for the past week and the weird weather changes have been making me so sick! But a couple of days ago we went to borders {in the rain} and there were wet leaves on the ground with peoples footprints in them and it reminded me of Yosemite, with the wet leaves with snow crunches in them!!! It made me smile! :) {I am sure you don't care- but I wanted to share this little story with you!!!} :)
    anywho!!! Happy HOlidays friend!!!!

  12. Ahh, the grass is always greener, huh? Or ... whiter, in this case. :) I live in Indiana and almost broke my scraper getting the ice off my windshield this morning. It's not really snowing so much as slushing right now. I'd trade it for an evergreen tied to a surf board rack in a heartbeat!

  13. How fun...what a neat idea.
We're usually the same here in So Cal, but actually we've been rainy and cold and able to put the fireplace on...something that doesn't happen very often!

    Enjoy your roaring fire!!

  14. I've been in Hawaii twice for Christmas and its so strange! I agree that there needs to be some cold to make it feel like the holidays. I love the fake fire, so festive!!

  15. We got one of those DVDs last year for Christmas... we laughed at, but I may just have to bust it out... we don't have a fireplace.

  16. Looks like you're faking it well! It's cold here in Kansas, but not freezing. We're expecting snow tomorrow night into Friday, though. I would miss the snow too, but just enjoy Hawaii while you can. I would almost bet someday when you don't live there anymore {I'm assuming you won't always} you'll miss it. Enjoy being in a tropical paradise with your sweetie. That's pretty awesome too! ;)
    thinking of you! Merry Christmas!

  17. Our first day of winter was 72 degrees!! No snow here in Mississippi! My mother in law is from Hawaii (I might have told you before - Ewa Beach) and I feel bad that she moved to MS - so she still never gets to see snow :(

I think you did a wonderful job "faking it" and I want one of those fire DVDs now!

  18. I am in the exact same situation i am used to British/German winters and now we are in Texas... its just not the same, i had to switch out my christmas drink from hot chocolate to chocolate milk and brandy :) MERRY CHRISTMAS

  19. i used to live in southern california and remember feeling this same way. i agree that it feels weird. just odd-like it really isn't the holiday or something. just strange. but I hope that regardless of the warmth and the rain that you and your family will have a lovely holiday nonetheless. {and when I moved back here I gave my fireside reflections dvd to goodwill} however now I wish I lived back on the west coast as I freeze my buttocks off over here on the east coast.
    much luv,
    gina

  20. We're expecting snow tonight (on Christmas!). I don't mean to rub it in, it's just I've never seen snow on Christmas in NC.

You need some of those wooden wick candles. They really sound like a fireplace. :)
